ASD is seeking candidates who hold active NV1, NV2 or TSPV security clearances.
This RFQ is agency wide, requirements depend on the different teams, however, an example of tools and technologies used are Splunk, various virtualisation technologies, Cisco, Juniper platforms, Linux, Python, Puppet, Ansible among others
ASD requires multiple EL1 equivalent System Engineers to fill positions across the organisation. A merit pool will be created for future positions that may arise.
Suitable candidates will be required to complete ASD’s Organisational Suitability Assessment (OSA). This will be required either prior to commencing or within 12 months of commencement, as required by the assigned work area. ASD will allocate successful candidates to work areas based on operational needs.

Job Description:
ASD expects the candidates will be able to facilitate planning, organisation, integration and delivery of complex systems engineering services and products.
Job Duties and Responsibilities may include:
- Develop systems engineering documentation, system designs, and systems maintenance plans and configuration management plans. Contribute to project plans ticketing systems and project timelines.
- Deploy hosting platforms in a scale-able and sustainable and method. Version control source code, use automation codebase for platform deployment, and maintain consistency in standards across the portfolio of platforms.
- Analyse complex systems engineering issues across a range of capability elements and apply expertise to identify and recommend courses of action
- Undertake stakeholder engagement to identify business needs. Share knowledge with stakeholder including giving architectural overviews, presentation and responses to requested architectural advice.
- Document the system designs and implementation processes. Use project tracking tools to track the progress of project delivery.
- Resolve issues and or problems that arise during the course of capability development projects.
- Assist in the continuous improvement process by developing and enhancing procedures.
Technical skills
• Holds a Bachelor degree in computer science, IT, software engineering, mechanical engineering or a related field. • Proficiency in installing, configuring, and troubleshooting UNIX-based environments. • Strong knowledge of programming languages. • Experience in monitoring systems to ensure optimal performance. • Familiarity with automation software. • Understanding of cloud platforms is desirable.
About the organisation
The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) is a statutory agency in the Defence portfolio that defends Australia against global threats and advances our national interests through the provision of foreign signals intelligence, cyber security and offensive cyber operations as directed by the Australian Government.
Essential criteria
1. ITOP 5 – Provides technical leadership to optimise the performance of IT infrastructure. Investigates and manages the adoption of tools, techniques and processes (including automation) for the management of systems and services. Oversees the planning, installation, maintenance and acceptance of new and updated infrastructure components and infrastructure-based services. Aligns to service expectations, security requirements and other quality standards. Ensures that operational procedures and documentation are fit for purpose and kept up to date. Ensures that operational issues are identified, recorded, monitored and resolved. Provides appropriate status and other reports to specialists, users and managers.
2. DESN 5 – Designs large or complex systems and undertakes impact analysis on major design options and trade-offs. Ensures that the system design balances functional and non-functional requirements. Reviews systems designs and ensures that appropriate methods, tools and techniques are applied effectively. Makes recommendations and assesses and manages associated risks. Adopts and adapts system design methods, tools and techniques. Contributes to development of system design policies, standards and selection of architecture components.
3. HSIN 5 – Takes responsibility for installation and/or decommissioning projects. Provides effective team leadership, including information flow to and from the customer during project work. Develops and implements quality plans and method statements. Monitors the effectiveness of installations and ensures that appropriate recommendations for change are made.
4. SINT 5 – Plans and drives activities to develop organisational systems integration and build capabilities including automation and continuous integration. Identifies, evaluates and manages the adoption of tools, techniques and processes to create a robust integration framework. Provides authoritative advice and guidance on any aspect of systems integration. Leads integration work in line with the agreed system and service design. Assesses risks and takes preventative action. Measures and monitors applications of standards. Contributes to the development of organisational policies, standards, and guidelines for systems integration.

Working arrangements will be at the discretion of the assigned work area, subject to operational need. Due to the nature of ASD’s operations, not all work areas can accommodate work from home. Most roles are based in Canberra. However, ASD may be able to accommodate candidates in the Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth facilities.
