Project Officers assist in the operations of a Project/Program/Portfolio Office and the delivery of projects.

ASD will be delivering technical systems integration activities for ADF Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities. To enable this, ASD seeks an experienced Project Officer to assist with day-to-day operations and project delivery.

The Project Officer will be a highly organised, dynamic, outcome orientated individual with excellent communication skills who is confident to break down large projects into discrete work packages from concept to delivery, for a diverse range of customers. They are responsible for supporting the implementation of projects, including defining the scope and requirements, developing plans and schedules, overseeing and planning resource allocation and work packages, managing risks and issues and communicating formally and informally on the project’s progress.

Candidates require a current AGSVA TSPV security clearance to perform the role.  ASD will not sponsor candidates to upgrade their security clearances.

Candidates must be willing to undergo ASD’s Organisational Suitability Assessment (OSA) prior to engagement.

•    Assist with project support tasks including the administration and coordination of project documentation.
•    Accountable to contribute to the ongoing application of project planning and scheduling.
•    Understand the reasons for decisions relating to project support and the broader impacts and implications of activities.
•    Apply knowledge and experience of legislation, policies, strategies and team plans to project support work.
•    Work collaboratively and operate as an effective team member.
•    Build and sustain productive working relations both internally and externally including capability development teams.
•    Take the initiative to progress work to meet business objectives.
•    Evaluate and provide advice on capability or proposals.

About the organisation

The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) is a statutory agency in the Defence portfolio that defends Australia against global threats and advances our national interests through the provision of foreign signals intelligence, cyber security and offensive cyber operations as directed by the Australian Government.

Essential criteria

1.Portfolio, programme and project support : Level 5 Takes responsibility for the provision of portfolio, programme and project support. Advises on the available standards, procedures, methods, tools and techniques. Evaluates project and/or programme performance and recommends changes where necessary. Contributes to reviews and audits of project and programme management to ensure conformance to standards

2.Stakeholder relationship management: Level 4 Deals with problems and issues, managing resolutions, corrective actions, lessons learned and the collection and dissemination of relevant information. Implements stakeholder engagement/communications plans. Collects and uses feedback from customers and stakeholders to help measure the effectiveness of stakeholder management. Helps develop and enhance customer and stakeholder relationships.

3.Business administration: Level 4 Assists the teams and managers in ensuring they have the information and resources needed to support ongoing processes. Assists in planning for meetings. Liaises and organises across functions. Sets up and provides detailed guidance on software, procedures, processes, tools and techniques for administration and workplace productivity. Contributes to the development and maintenance of organisational policies, procedures and documentation.

Required criteria

1.Demonstrated experience in providing services to Defence capability projects is highly desirable.


The successful candidate will work 5 days per week and up to a maximum of 40 hours per week, unless otherwise agreed with their manager. The role is Canberra based, Interstate based candidates cannot be accommodated. WFH cannot be accommodated. Candidates must be willing to undergo ASD’s Organisational Suitability Assessment (OSA) prior to engagement

Information on ASD’s Organisational Suitability Assessment (OSA)

An OSA is an ASD policy requirement for contractors who will be engaged for a period in excess of 12 months and are conducted to determine a person’s suitability to work in ASD.  The OSA requires a psychological assessment, which involves a questionnaire and an interview.
