The Full Stack Developer will contribute to the delivery of software systems that enable data visualisation and decision support across multiple defence-related projects. The role will focus on migrating technical delivery from outsourced partners into Defence programmatic delivery and management in a DevOps context with a focus on analytical products and decision support system critical to supporting Army Senior Leadership to make timely, informed decisions. Future projects will vary in complexity and maturity, including both greenfield and brownfield systems, where the developer will contribute to enhancement, integration, or replacement of new and existing capabilities. The developer will work under the guidance of a senior technical lead who will provide architectural support and mentorship throughout the engagement, ensuring continuity and technical alignment.
The role may also include suppoing the development and evolution of best practices for software development in a highly agile context in order to understand how software development could occur in a contested environment.
Finally, the role will also contribute to the broader transition from legacy infrastructure to the One Defence Data (1DD) ecosystem. This includes supporting the migration of services, aligning development practices with 1DD standards, and helping teams adopt new patterns, platforms, and integration points as they become available.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Application Development
- Develop and maintain full stack web projects for data visualisation and decision support
- Implement visualisations, integrating with existing services and data sources
- Support external teams by advising on integration, process alignment, and low-effort delivery options
- Assist with testing and coordination, including in-office participation as required
- Contribute to the transition from legacy infrastructure
- Collaborate with senior developers and stakeholders to ensure maintainable, secure, and reproducible solutions
- Support external teams through integration guidance, process alignment, and pragmatic delivery advice
- Undertake technical analysis for legacy systems to determine recommendations for migration onto cloud platforms.
2. Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with business analysts, product owners and military stakeholders to understand functional and non-functional requirements.
- Interact with senior stakeholders through project lifecycle to facilitate decision making and outcomes
- Act as a liaison between functional and technical stakeholders, facilitating clear communication and alignment.
- Guide development teams and management through architectural decisions, ensuring consistent application of best practices and patterns.
- Collaborate with technical teams from other platforms regarding application re-architecture, migration and new product development with regard to best practices, architectural patterns etc.
Technical skills
SQL skills and understanding 3NF and Kimbal data architectures, .Net RDBSM data integration / back end, full stack development (any one of Angular, Vue or Svelt for front end), DevOps, automation etc. Interest in AI / ML engineering, Cloud infrastructure etc highly regarded.

About the project
Australian Army is investing in data as a capability to support reporting and decision making across the organisation. The initial project is a straight forward greenfield, strategic decision support application providing a smooth introduction to defence development workflows, infrastructure, and security practices. This allows the developer to become familiar with the environment and tooling before progressing to more complex work. Subsequent projects will vary in scope and maturity, including both greenfield and brownfield systems, requiring broader technical engagement and deeper integration across existing platforms. Throughout the engagement, a senior technical lead will be available to provide support, architectural guidance, and mentorship. This ensures continuity, fosters knowledge transfer, and enables the developer to contribute effectively while building familiarity with the domain and delivery environment.
Essential criteria
1.Minimum five years demonstrated experience with developing web applications including front end legacy frameworks such as Angular with a strong preference for newer adopted frameworks being Vue, Svelte, REACT.
2.Minimum five years demonstrated experience with developing applications using languages of Javascript/Typescript, C# (.NET), Nodejs
3.Minimum three years experience with any one of SQL Server (preferred) , Oracle or PostgreSQL relational databases and familiarly with SQL development including stored procedures / advanced queries.
4.Strong communication skills and ability to interact with differing personalities in a structed organisational culture. Ability to receive direction and work independently to achieve outcome.
Highly desirable criteria
1.Military ICT Technology: Direct exposure with (preferably) military business and operational systems or (alternatively) Commonwealth agencies. Interacting with senior or key (military or government) stakeholders to derive and translate military requirements into technical solutions. Experience with developing technical products across multiple business domains and implementation of governance and compliance requirements such as security, privacy etc.
2.Technical skills that the successful candidate may be exposed to:
• Python
• Kubernetes / Docker
• Cloudera analytics environment
• OLAP and Decision Support Systems
3.Experience with working with, and providing direction to, externally contracted consultancies or agencies including providing technical guidance, assurance and governance in order to meet product timelines, standards and quality specifications.
8 hours per day, 5 days per week with hours of work between 8am and 6pm. Hybrid work model with remote work and onsite attendance for meetings, workshops and specific engineering tasks as required. Some weekend work may be required to meet project initiatives under exceptional circumstances.
