Job Specific role description
The Department requires an ICT Infrastructure Senior Email Engineer to undertake the following tasks from within a multi-team environment:
- lead design and implementation activities modernising DFAT’s email service utilising Microsoft Exchange Online and Fortra Secure Email Gateways;
- drive the technical direction of email system modernisation work packages under the DUP;
- ensure compliance with the DFATs enterprise and security architecture frameworks;
- develop system design documentation and ensuring they are approved; and
- develop implementation plans and working closely with technical SME’s to successfully implement and test the designed outcome.
The Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA) has been used to inform the requirements. In summary, DFAT seeks a suitable candidate with the following skill sets:
Skills/Levels:
- Development and Implementation / Systems Development / Infrastructure Design (IFDN) – Level 6
Technical skills
Microsoft Purview and broader M365 security and compliance tools; Microsoft Defender for Office 365; Cloud security architecture and Zero Trust principles.
About the project
The Digital Uplift Program (DUP) of work has been established to improve the security and resilience of DFAT’s ICT environment. A key program objective is to deliver a Modern International Communications Network (ICN) moving infrastructure and applications quickly to cloud environments.
Essential criteria
1. • Proven expertise with Microsoft Exchange Online, including Exchange Online Protection (EOP), hybrid configurations, and migrations.
2. • Hands-on experience with Fortra (formerly Clearswift) Secure Email Gateways.
3. • Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and troubleshoot secure email infrastructure solutions.
4. • Experience implementing protective markings and associated email handling policies across email infrastructure.
5. • Proficient in writing high-quality technical documentation, including design and implementation documents.
6. • Skilled in presenting technical solutions to workgroups, architecture review boards, and design authority meetings.
Desirable criteria
1. • Strong understanding of email security concepts including encryption, DLP, and compliance.
2. • Knowledgeable in email routing, SMTP protocols, DNS configurations (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), and mail flow diagnostics.
3. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders.
4. • Technical tertiary qualifications and Microsoft certifications are highly desirable.
Must be available to be full time onsite at 51 Allara St, Canberra. Work from home arrangements possible by negotiation and approval by DFAT management.
