ASD is seeking candidates who hold active NV1, NV2 or TSPV security clearances.
Key duties and responsibilities
ASD requires multiple APS5 equivalent Project Support Officers to fill positions across the organisation. A merit pool will be created for future positions that may arise.
Suitable candidates will be required to complete ASD’s Organisational Suitability Assessment (OSA). This will be required either prior to commencing or within 12 months of commencement, as required by the assigned work area. ASD will allocate successful candidates to work areas based on operational needs.

Job Description
ASD expects these candidates will demonstrate technical expertise and be able to undertake work that is complex in nature. They will be able to operate with limited direction. They will be accountable for organising their workflow and making independent decisions relating to their area of responsibility. They are accountable to have and maintain a well-developed understanding of and compliance to relevant legislative frameworks, government decision-making and ASD’s mission and policy requirements.
The PSOs will be accountable for organising their workflow and making independent decisions relating to their area of responsibility. They will interpret and provide advice within the project control function based on legislation, policy and procedures. They will undertake specialist research and analysis, conduct reviews and perform procedural and administrative support work to achieve results. They will also coordinate and contribute to the work of a team consistent to a work plan and provide advice and assistance on methods of task completion to team members.
Job Duties and Responsibilities may include:
- Accountable to contribute to the development and maintenance of project, program and/or portfolio planning and performance processes in accordance with agreed procedures and performance standards.
- Assist with preparations for project test, evaluation and acceptance programs.
- Apply project management methodologies to administrative and technical activities.
- Research, draft and prepare briefs, correspondence and reports including submissions for committee consideration.
- Work collaboratively, operate as an effective team member and provide constructive feedback.
- Engage with relevant stakeholders and understand their expectations and concerns.
- Adjust project management methodologies to comply with legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks.
- Resolve problems using expertise, taking the initiative to identify alternative courses of action.
- Maintain project financial records under the direction of the Project Manager.
- Conduct other project-related tasks within the scope of the stated APS level, as required by the assigned work area.
Technical skills
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a PSO or similar role. • Knowledge of project management methodologies, e.g. PRINCE2 • Experience working with Microsoft 365 and other software applications.
About the organisation
The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) is a statutory agency in the Defence portfolio that defends Australia against global threats and advances our national interests through the provision of foreign signals intelligence, cyber security and offensive cyber operations as directed by the Australian Government.
Essential criteria
1. PROF 3 – Portfolio, programme and project support: Level 3 (SFIA) Provides foundational support for projects, programmes, or portfolios. Assists with planning, scheduling, tracking and reporting using established tools and processes. Follows recommended solutions to ensure accurate documentation and communication of project progress. Collaborates closely with project teams and stakeholders, gathering updates and information to maintain project records and ensure alignment with project objectives. Participates in project boards, assurance teams and quality review meetings when necessary.
2. BUDF 2 – Assists in gathering financial data and preparing basic budget templates under supervision. Supports the budgeting and forecasting process by completing assigned tasks.
3. CSMG 3 – Customer service support: Level 3 (SFIA) Acts as a routine contact point for customers, handling a wide range of inquiries and service requests. Performs initial investigation and diagnosis of customer issues, resolving them where possible or escalating as needed. Contributes to the development of service standards and procedures. Assists in analysing service performance data and identifying areas for improvement.
Working arrangements will be at the discretion of the assigned work area, subject to operational need. Due to the nature of ASD’s operations, not all work areas can accommodate work from home. Most roles are based in Canberra. However, ASD may be able to accommodate candidates in the Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth facilities.
