Data Analysts the design, analysis and delivery of relevant, trusted and objective statistics and data-related insights.

Data Integration & Engineering (DIE) section is accountable for the design, development and ongoing sustainment of core integrated data assets that are used to support downstream business needs.

Key duties and responsibilities

The Specified Personnel will be responsible for providing the following deliverables including but not limited to:

  • Producing analytical work that is customer focused;
  • Triaging code problems and data-related issues;
  • Discovering trends, patterns and stories told by the data, structured and unstructured, and presenting them to stakeholders;
  • Leveraging new open data sources and extracting further value from existing data;
  • Producing creative data visualizations and intuitive graphics to presenting complex analytics;
  • Performing data discovery with primary and secondary sources;
  • Cleaning and pruning data to discard irrelevant information;
  • Identifying new opportunities for process improvement;
  • Providing concise data reports and clear data visualizations for management;
  • Applying data quality techniques to cleanse data and providing feedback for ETL / data quality solutions.

Specified Personnel will be expected to transfer skills and knowledge to departmental staff and ensure appropriate documentation is stored in accordance with the Department’s recordkeeping policy and practices.

The Specified Personnel will also be responsible for producing the following deliverables, including but not limited to:

  • System Design Specifications;
  • Detailed business requirement documents;
  • Mapping documents that provide detailed cohort rules and individual field mappings.

All deliverables performed by the specified personnel must:

  1. be performed or delivered promptly and without delay in accordance with the timeframes notified by the buyer from time to time; and
  2. meet the assessment and performance criteria set out in any monitoring and performance assessment processes notified to the seller from time to time.

About the team

The Data Integration & Engineering Section (DI&E) develops and maintains data assets in the Connected Information Environment (CIE), which are used to support business information reporting, risk assessment and intelligence analysis. The Data Platforms Section is responsible for maintaining an enterprise repository encompassing the majority of data within the Department. The section acquires, integrates, and processes data from internal source systems and external agencies to support business intelligence, analytics, and decision-making. It oversees the operation of the Connected Information Environment (CIE), including Teradata, AWS Cloud Platforms, and Analyst Desktop.

About the project

The role will lead and support the delivery of data integration, analytics, AI, and machine learning solutions across complex enterprise platforms, including systems that integrate cross-domain data sources to provide consolidated business views, reporting, intelligence, and analytical capabilities. The successful candidate will also contribute to the maintenance and optimisation of the CIE and its supporting infrastructure, including database administration, performance management, system reliability, and operational support, while ensuring compliance with data governance, privacy, security, and responsible AI requirements.

Essential criteria

1.Data management level 4 – Devises and implements master data management processes for specific subsets of data. Assesses the integrity of data from multiple sources. Provides advice on the transformation of data from one format/medium to another. Maintains and implements information handling procedures. Enables the availability, integrity and searchability of information through the application of formal data and metadata structures and protection measures.

2.Data modelling and design level 4 – Investigates enterprise data requirements where there is some complexity and ambiguity. Plans own data modelling and design activities, selecting appropriate techniques and the correct level of detail for meeting assigned objectives. Provides advice and guidance to others using the data structures and associated components.

3.Data Visualisation Level 4 – Applies a variety of visualisation techniques and designs the content and appearance of data visuals. Operationalises and automates activities for efficient and timely production of data visuals. Selects appropriate visualisation approaches from a range of applicable options. Contributes to exploration and experimentation in data visualisation.

4.Statistical data analysis level 3 – Contributes to the development of new functionality for statistical analysis applications, which enables new ways of doing things Can write custom scripts and code in a statistical computing language to conduct complex analytical tasks Maintains understanding of new trends and innovations relating to statistical data analysis (including Artificial Intelligence-based technologies) and develops skills in these where relevant.

5.Subject matter expertise level 3 – Is an expert resource on the subject matter area associated with data use, including understanding and influencing the effective use of the data within that subject matter area and the relationship between that use and other data use contexts

Required criteria

1.Demonstrated experience working in a large corporate enterprise data warehouse environment utilizing relevant data modelling techniques including relational modelling and dimensional modelling.

2.Significant hands-on experience developing conceptual, logical, and physical data models with the ability to leverage from, and expand, existing enterprise data models.

3.Demonstrated experience working with ERWIN Data Modeling platform.


Successful applicants must work full time on site for 1 month or until they understand the department’s ICT landscape, requirements and project objectives. Flexible working arrangements may be considered afterward, subject to approval per the Department’s operational needs and ICT Contractor Working from Home Guidelines. Contractors must be on-site in Canberra at least 2 days per week. Remote work costs (e.g. travel, accommodation, utilities, and equipment) are the contractor’s responsibility.
