Two Business Architects are required by ASD to create and evolve architecture models that inform the design, development and evolution of business processes and supporting ICT systems. As an on-going capability within ASD they contribute to:
- Directing the development of enterprise-wide architecture and processes to embed the strategic application of change in the management of the organisation.
- Directing the creation and review of an enterprise capability strategy to support the strategic requirements of the business. Identifies the business benefits of alternative strategies.
- Ensuring compliance between business strategies, enterprise transformation activities and technology directions, setting strategies, policies, standards and practices.
Candidates must be willing to undergo ASD’s Organisational Suitability Assessment (OSA) prior to engagement.
Candidates MUST have an active TSPV Security Clearance.
ASD will not sponsor candidates to upgrade their security clearances in order to apply for the role.
Key duties and responsibilities
ASD requires two EL2 equivalent Business Architects to take a leading role in a number of business architecture activities.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Including but not limited to:
- translating business strategies and objectives into an operating model
- assessing current capabilities and identifying required changes in capabilities to achieve objectives
- describing the interrelationships between people, organisation, service, process, data, information, technology and the external environment
- creating, iterating, and maintaining architectural models and views embodying the key principles that describe the organisation’s future state, and that enable its evolution
- implementing enterprise architecture working practices to support and enable iterative/agile working
- interpreting business goals and drivers
- documenting and communicating constraints, standards and guiding principles necessary to define, assure and govern the required evolution
- using architectural models and processes to facilitate changes in the organisation’s structure, business processes, information or data, business systems and infrastructure
- describing where and why the enterprise will benefit from cloud-based services.
- engaging with stakeholders to elicit requirements and communicating relevant progress of activities
- validating business requirements and traceability to solution designs and configurations
- ensuring designs are aligned to ASD architectural standards and strategy
- contributing to the approval of designs through architectural and stakeholder bodies
- working with project teams to ensure plans are updated as implementation evolves
- contributing to the development of High Level Designs and Detailed Designs
- Contributing to related documentation such as System Security Plans, transition and support plans
- Maintaining architectural artefacts
- Knowledge transfer to APS staff (direct, documentation, intranet)
Candidates should have the following technical skills:
- Business Process Modelling;
- Value Stream Modelling;
- TOGAF 10;
- Archimate 3.2;
- Orbus iServer;
- Power BI; and
- Microsoft Visio.
Candidates must have the following:
- Six or more years’ experience in related roles.

The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) is a statutory agency in the Defence portfolio that defends Australia against global threats and advances our national interests through the provision of foreign signals intelligence, cyber security and offensive cyber operations as directed by the Australian Government.
Essential criteria
- 1.Demonstrated understanding of the role of a Business Architect, with consideration of the role description, job duties and responsibilities described.
- 2.Demonstrated experience leading business process improvement in ICT enterprise environments, creating new and potentially disruptive approaches to performing business activities, and providing advice and recommendations, based on expertise and experience, to address client needs.
- 3.Demonstrated experience in an ICT enterprise environment leading the alignment of an organisation’s technology strategy with its business mission, strategy and processes and documenting this using architectural models.
- 4.Demonstrated experience in an ICT enterprise environment undertaking business modelling to create abstract or distilled models of business scenarios, representing processes, data and roles to support decision-making and analysis.
- 5.Demonstrated experience undertaking monitoring of emerging technologies, identifying and assessing new and emerging technologies, products, services, methods and techniques.
- 6.Demonstrated experience undertaking stakeholder relationship management, systematically analysing, managing and influencing stakeholder relationships to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes through structured engagement.
Desirable criteria
- 1.Degree or other qualification in a related discipline.
Onsite (Canberra) 40 hours per week. Interstate based candidates cannot be accommodated.
